The waters off the coast of Placencia are perhaps best known for the large numbers of permit that inhabit the southern area’s huge chain of cayes and flats. If you are staying in Placencia or at the Inn at Robert's Grove itself, then you are typically making a run of about 45-minutes each morning to fish. Staying at Robert's Caye will allow you to fish only minutes from where you are sleeping! As a matter of fact, we have actually had permit swim directly under our over-the-water-deck as we've relaxed in a hammock during a mid-day siesta. Surrounded on all sides by deep, blue water, the healthy sand and turtlegrass flats of the area are home to some of the largest permit found anywhere. A number of the mangrove islands also hold good numbers of tarpon that can range in size from 20 to over 70 pounds. Schools of bonefish can be found throughout the cayes for those anglers interested in pursuing the elusive grand slam. Species: Permit, tarpon, and bonefish, with possible shots at snook, barracuda, jacks, snapper, and more.
Robert's Grove is a large resort with several different accommodations options, from smaller, single rooms to larger, family-style suites. All rooms and suites feature private baths, air conditioning, ceiling fans and private terraces. The larger suites feature all of the same amenities as the standard rooms, with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, a living room with futon couches, and a kitchenette. Overall, the accommodations are very nice - more in line with amenities found at a higher-end resorts rather than a typical fishing camp.
Robert's Caye is a tiny one-acre island that is owned by Robert's Grove and located approximately eight miles off the coast of Placencia. The Caye features four stilted cabanas built directly over the water. These cabanas are constructed with spacious decks and stairs that actually lower via a pulley system directly onto the small home flat. Each is outfitted with a king bed (or two twins, if requested), a full bathroom, and a private terrace with hammocks. An ideal setting for honeymooners and sportsmen alike, this "swept away" island paradise is surrounded by crystal-clear water, abundant marine life, and immediate access to some of the best permit fishing in all of Belize.
